Class Descriptions
Toddler Dance (2-4 years old)
This creative movement class encompasses a wide range of goals. The primary goal is to foster a love of movement. Additional goals include cognitive development, self expression and a positive self image. The creative component is quite large. Several fun or special activities happen in each class. For example, a scarf or flag dance at the end of class can facilitate the dancer’s own physical expression. Taking part in dancing out a narrative helps children to understand that dancing is expression. It is a means of communicating feeling and actions. This class provides an introduction to dance and music. Parents are encouraged to take part in the class with their child.
Ballet (3 years & up)
Classical ballet is taught safely, using correct technique. Correct terminology and body placement are always used. We use the Cecchetti method of ballet. This technique is a graded, educational method that examines teachers and students, ensuring quality ballet technique. Pre-ballet is taught to children age 3-5 years of age, focusing on basic steps, positions and technique. Classical ballet is taught to students age 6 and up. The program progresses in difficulty as students mature in their study.
Pointe (at least 10 years old)
Pointe is offered to students when the necessary level of strength has been developed. Students wishing to work toward their point shoes should enroll in Grade I Cecchetti. Pointe students should be enrolled in at least 2 ballet classes per week to maintain the strength necessary to dance on pointe safely.
Tap (3 years and up)
Tap is percussive, rhythmic dance using the feet as your instrument. Tap technique builds on the basic steps like shuffle and flaps. The technique is a progressional, graded method, starting out slower for the beginner and as the dancer progresses, multiple sounds and speed are added. We teach tap using the correct terminology and technique.
Hip Hop Tumble Tots (3-5 year olds)
Hip Hop Tumble Tots is a combination class that incorporates beginning hip hop technique as well as beginning tumbling skills. This class will be high energy with strong, powerful technique. The activities will support gross motor development. Music and technique will be age appropriate. Students are not exploited or dancing in a way that is too seductive.
Jazz/Hip-Hop(5 years and up)
Jazz is powerful and exciting and is the style of dance seen in many Broadway type shows such as “Cats.” Jazz dance is taught using the correct technique, terminology and body placement. Jazz dance uses it’s own terminology as well as terminology borrowed from ballet and modern dance
Hip-Hop is fast and full of high energy. It is the type of dance seen in music videos and commercials. Dance moves seen in shows such as Janet Jackson, Jump 5 and other pop stars would be typical examples of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop at our studio is done in such a way so that students are not exploited or dancing in a way that is too seductive.
Lyrical (8 years and up)
Lyrical dance incorporates the interpretation of the lyrics or mood of a song. This class combines the techniques of modern dance, ballet and jazz and includes the use of leg work, balance, and facial and body emotion.
